Shooting at a school in the United States: there are at least one dead and eight injured
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado, USA - A shooting at a US school left at least one person dead and eight injured on Tuesday afternoon at a private school in Highland Ranch, in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. The educational center, called STEM, is located 13 kilometers from Columbine High School, where 20 students killed 20 people two years ago.
In the afternoon, the suspects entered the school and began to shoot the students in two classrooms. In a matter of minutes, officers from a nearby police station entered the scene and arrested the attackers after a confrontation, according to Douglas County Police Chief Tony Spurlock. "By the time they got to the school, the officers could still hear the shots," said County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Holly Nicholson-Kluth.
"I must believe that the quick response from the agents who entered the school helped save lives," Spurlock said. So far there are two suspects arrested: one is of legal age and the other is minor. The authorities did not disclose the name of the deceased student, but they indicated that he is an 18-year-old male. Through the official Twitter account of the local police, they said: "It is with extreme sadness that we confirm that a STEM student was murdered today, his immediate family has already been notified, Colonel Jill Romann has not officially identified student, but it's about an 18-year-old. On the wounded, Spurlock said: "We have eight students who are in area hospitals at this time, several of them are in critical condition." He assured that all the wounded are "15 years old". Then, he added: "I do not have specific information about all of them, I can not say if they are men, women." He also indicated that he suspects that the detainees were also students of the school.
"We are working with the prosecution for search warrants in the homes of the suspects and a vehicle," the official said. The vehicle is located in the school parking lot. "We will do everything possible to determine what happened (...), we will get to the bottom of this terrible event that nobody wants in their community."
The STEM school houses 1850 pre-school, elementary and high school students, and was evacuated in the face of the dramatic situation, while elite police searched each classroom. Images from the local press showed students leaving the building with their arms on their heads.

Christian Paulson, a student at the school, told the ABC branch in Denver that he heard children screaming "School shooting!" As they ran. "I was like '' What, is this real or a lie? ', And I went after them," he said. "I ran with all my energy, I ran out of air."
Dozens of ambulances, fire trucks, patrols and helicopters were deployed on the outskirts of the school. The STEM is a "charter school", that is, an educational institute with public financing that must apply the local programs but that are administered autonomously. And, unlike the public schools of the district, it has private surveillance and not an assigned police officer.
The school is 13 kilometers from Columbine High School, where 20 students killed 20 people two years ago. The Columbine shooting occurred on April 20, 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, seniors, shot dead 12 classmates and a teacher before committing suicide.
Columbine has been followed by even more terrible school shootings: in April 2007, at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, an attack left 32 dead; In December 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, 20 children between 6 and 7 years were killed; and in February 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, an attack left 17 people dead.
